This piece shows a Marine carving a notch in the stock of his rifle after the battle of Chateau Thierry. Later during the war, the U.S. Marines will fight in the battle of Belleau Wood, earning the nickname "Teufel Hunden" (Devil Dogs) from their German adversaries because of the Marines extreme ferocity in battle.
